| The desire for fulfillment, the desire for escape are part of the
human field of existence. It is very natural that you long to get
out of this, to transcend it, to get over it, to somehow be finished
with this mess.
The only way you have been able to try to make sense out of this life
is through some form of escape: death, drugs, or addictions. These
things are all temporary. I know, you think death is final. But you
can only think this way, because you do not understand the totality
of this existence. There are many philosophies, systems, religions,
concepts. These are fabricated by the intellect through the desire
and attachment to be better off, to be inspired, to feel hopeful. It
is very natural. There is nothing wrong with it. It is the human
thing to do. What else are you going to do while you are struggling
to survive in this life, when all that you experience in this
physical world is separation, sprinkled with moments of joy, of
acceptance. The self-acceptance is never permanent.
There are many good books, there are many teachers, offering some
medicine, some placebo, some help. But there is no cure for the
human condition, because you are not sick. All the time you go
through life thinking that there is something wrong with you, but
that very act of thinking fabricates something that is wrong.
It is your thinking that does the most damage to you. There is the
saying, "Do no harm." To do no harm is to think harmoniously,
allowingly, lovingly, compassionately. That kind of thinking does no
harm. Negative thinking - judgment, comparisons, attachments,
resistance, concepts of "good and evil," - that kind of thinking does
great harm to your existence, because you open the door to duality.
You fabricate a reality that is very destructive, throwing you out of
balance. And then you seek medicine, something to remedy the
situation. There is no cure in that situation. There is no way out
of it.
As long as you are this human existence, you are subject to the
programming, the conditioning, the beliefs, the concepts. No wonder
you wish to escape. It is no wonder you take drugs to dull the pain,
tranquilizers to calm the storms. The human has become very
inventive with medicines. But medicines are for the sick. You are
not sick.
It is the lack of knowing that creates suffering. If you do not know
Life, then you are suffering division. You believe what the
intellect says, what the outside says. You believe in the systems,
the structures, the religions, the processes, the disciplines, the
concepts, thinking that they are a good medicine, that somehow the
miracle will happen and you will be cured of your disease of
separation. We can call it a disease, but it is more a dis-ease with
life. You don't see the big picture, you don't recognize the
totality of this experience.
Unfortunately, most teachings have not assisted you in coming to this
realization of Life. Most teachings point to something
else, something other. Most teachings say, "This isn't it; this is a
mistake; this is a punishment. You must suffer through this, and
hopefully through this suffering you will somehow become aware, and
experience a transcendence in which you move to the other." That can
be a helpful awareness when you are caught in suffering. It can
soothe the pain.
This is in no way to make light of your suffering. Your suffering is
a reality, but not the actuality. That is the one thing you need to
be aware of: there is this reality made up of thoughts, beliefs,
concepts, conditioning, which is basically hypnosis. You are
hypnotized into accepting this reality, into believing that it is the
only reality available. You forgot, or did not know, that there are
over six billion realities on this planet at this moment. Each
individual is a creator of reality, a personal reality that forms the
collective, the consensus. And so we have certain conglomerate
realities that fit certain segments of the population, certain areas
of the world. These realities join together to create a super
reality. And then there is the over-arching reality of the human
condition that says: "This isn't it. There is something else
controlling this, fabricating this."
If that reality were all that there is, I would certainly be putting
my money into finding a cure, a drug, some escape. But because I
know there is more to it than that, I recognize your suffering, but I
also recognize that you brought your suffering on yourself. This is
in no way to blame you. You simply bought the program. It looked
like it was the only program on the shelf; there was nothing else to
buy.
It is like going to the music store. You look at the shelf and
choose a CD. You take it home and listen to it. Then you go back to
the store and buy another CD. You bring it home and listen to it,
only to find out it is the same CD, the same music, as the one you
bought before. That is essentially what is happening to human
beings. They keep buying the same program, accepting the same
conditioning. There doesn't seem to be anything else to buy.
A high spiritual teacher once said, "It is the nature of humans to
suffer. You will always be suffering." And so humans have taken
that seriously and concluded that there is no way out of suffering.
I understand why humans have gravitated to systems and teachings that
say, "Your pain is an illusion. Meditate, find a place of serenity
where you are void of the outside, and you will feel all right."
Humans have been doing that for thousands of years, even though it
hasn't worked. "Let's just take some more of the medicine," they
think, "maybe it hasn't had time to work yet."
You are suffering confusion and separation. Consensus reality knows
that it must occasionally give you a little bit of relief to keep you
going. It is as if you take the medicine and you sort of feel good
immediately afterwards. "Yes, that is working," you think. But soon
you need to take it again, and again, and again.
People do this. They pay $500 to go to a seminar, they get all
charged up, they feel good about themselves and say, "Now, that's
it! That's the medicine. I got it. I'm liberated." And then the
next seminar comes to town and they decide, "Well, I'd better go for
more medicine because the previous one has worn off already. The
same old stuff is happening again. That's what I get for taking the
bargain medicine. The next seminar is $1,000, so it should be
better." The more something costs, the better it is to the
conditional mind.
You equate so much with price, but you don't realize the price you
are paying for your thinking. You don't realize the energy it takes
to hold yourself in separation, to hold yourself in the past, to hold
onto thoughts and concepts that diminish you, that harm you. You
never take into account how much energy it takes to be sick. It
takes a lot of energy to remain sick, because you have to hold onto
things. You have to hold onto self-doubt, unworthiness, the past.
Everybody's past indicates to them that they are not good enough.
The illusion is propagated by individuals who are speaking from the
past, from "about," from the outside, from the other. It is all very
innocent, because that is all they know. They are really trying to
do something for humanity, to help others, but the medicine doesn't
work. The solution doesn't solve the problem, because YOU are the
problem.
If your life is in shambles, you have to realize that you are the
source of your problem. This is not to make you guilty, but to
awaken you to the realization that your life is created by you and no
one else. I know that there are horrendous things that have happened
to human beings in this world. But nothing has happened to you that
is more horrendous than what has happened to others. You may have
suffered greatly, but you can always find someone else who has
suffered more.
So you have to quit feeling sorry for yourself, and get on with it.
I know we have this conditional thinking that says, "Let's get
revenge. They will pay for what they have done." That it is very
expensive, however. What they pay you never compensates for the
effort, the pain you suffer in getting them to pay it. Sometimes it
is best to cut your losses and walk away. This is called
forgiveness. The most important person to forgive in your life is
you, because you have harmed yourself. Not on purpose. If you knew
you were harming yourself, you probably wouldn't have done it.
Humans are terribly wounded. It is painful to observe the
woundedness of society, of the world, because I know it doesn't have
to be that way. You do not have to suffer. You can live this life
without suffering. You just need to understand a few basic things:
Life is self-created. You create the life that you live, that you
experience.
You have the life you believe in having. This is true because you
are so powerful. You must acknowledge that, if you can make such a
great mess of your life, you are really powerful. How can you take
something that is perfect and mess it up? That requires a lot of
energy and power. And so if you can have that kind of power to mess
up your life, why can't you use the same power to make your life all
right?
First, you forgive yourself for messing up your life. That is
responsibility. "OK, I bought the program, I took it, I paid for it,
I believed it. But damn, do I have to continue to pay for it?"
You keep paying for the same thing over and over. It is as if the
bill for somebody else's car payment comes to your house. You think, "Well, it came to my door, it must be mine, so I'll pay it." You
don't know who the owner is, you don't have the car, you've never
seen the car, you never get to ride in it, yet you pay the bill every
month. Since you always pay it, the bill keeps coming to you.
The nature of Is-ness, of Life, is this: the human experience and
the non-human experience are like two circles that partially cross
over each other. The space where the circles cross over each other
is you. It is not a duality. You are THAT. You are that point
where the two circles meet and cross. And so you are The
Consciousness having the human experience. Some try to remain in the
human circle: "This is it; this is all there is; you are born, you
eat, you propagate, and you die; end of story."
Others try to reside in the non-human circle: "This isn't it; you
are captured by these lower frequencies; it is not what you are; it
is an illusion; you are not born (though you do eat and propagate),
and you do not die." In this line of thinking, you may allow that
you are a "spiritual being having a physical experience," but you
never allow that you ARE the physical experience. Instead, you are
somebody from somewhere else who is having the physical experience.
This life becomes like a suit of clothes that you put on, and wear
and wear and wear, until the clothes wear out. And then you move
onto something else, another lifetime, or heaven or hell.
It is not an either/or situation. It is a matter of frequency. The
rock stage, the solid stage, is the lowest of frequencies that we
experience. The light, the air, the essence, are a very high
frequency. The human being is the creation that has the miraculous
ability to blend the two into one. That is the essence of Life: to
take the solid and the ethereal and merge them into Now as this
Self. This blending, this meeting place of these frequencies, this
in-between place, is where the human resides.
There is work taking place here. The human being is the process of
materializing possibilities, which are experiences of existence.
This is the only place where The Consciousness can experience this
blending.
You can get lost in the solidity of the physical. Or you can have
high thoughts, clinging to the spiritual, never wanting to be soiled
by life, remaining aloof and separate from the direct experience of
the physical, and calling such aloofness "divine." But you miss the
experience when you do that.
The real Life is here now, this physical manifestation. This
physical manifestation is the creative mode of The Consciousness. It
can only happen here. That is why you are powerful, why you can make
a mess of things. You are empowered as The Consciousness to do
whatever you might do, and in that process of doing you learn how
energy works.
I wish for you to recognize that you have come to the end of certain
possibilities of how energy works. You have run the course of
separation. You have experienced as much as you can as an
individual. The next step, the next phase for human existence is to
realize that humanity is the presence, the manifestation of The
Consciousness, and that it has some great possibilities to bring into
existence. It won't happen if humans cling to the past.
I may sound like I am anti-religion, anti-spiritual disciplines, and
I am. They are mill stones around your neck, anchors that keep you
from realizing who you are Life. I encourage you to
appreciate your individuality, but individuality is not separation.
Individuality is simply a unique expression of the Self.
It is like the kaleidoscope. If you look through one end, you see a
beautiful tapestry. If you look through the other end, you see just
colored glass and rocks. You look at the big end of the
kaleidoscope, the separate end, you see all the pieces, and you
think, "How could those disconnected things ever be anything?" But
at the other end, the right observational point, those pieces all
merge into a tapestry, something that is beautiful, interesting.
That is the way The Consciousness is. It takes these appearances of
pieces and merges them into a wholeness. The only way for you to
recognize The Consciousness is for you to go past the perception of
individuality, of separation, and realize the connection. The
obstacle to this is your attachment to the separation.
I know the human predicament is illogical. Why would you be attached
to pain, to suffering, to separation? It is because of the belief
that you have to fix it. You are born into the idea that you must "fix it." Some people make a career out of trying to fixing
things. Once you have people who make a career out of fixing
things, you must have others who make a career out of breaking things.
The fixers and the breakers will be out of a job in this next
dispensation of Life. We are starting to feel the ramifications of
The Consciousness as it accelerates. The intellect will interpret
this in many, many different ways. There is a scripture which says, "Don't put new wine into old wine skins, because the skins will
burst." The intellect wants to put everything into what it already
knows, so we may have a big mess to clean up when the intellects burst.
It will not be easy. Most likely, it will be the hardest thing you
have ever done, because you will have to recognize how your
intellect, how beliefs and concepts constantly try to reassert
themselves and take over. You must remember that you create your
reality. And so, if you don't like the reality you have created,
stop it! The tendency is to think, "I can't stop it." But in the
realm of knowing who you really are as The Consciousness, why can't you stop it?
To get a divorce in the Islamic tradition, the husband says, "I
divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you," and it is done. Why
can't you do that with the past? The intellect tries to analyze it,
to see what went wrong, to fix it, and all that does is to lower you
into the realm of deception, comparison, where problems abound.
Instead, you can say "Depart from me, I do not know you! I am not
going to have anything to do with you any more. You are not my friend."
You cling to the past because the past makes you special. There is
such a human need to be special. The need to be special is ego-
driven; it fortifies your ego boundaries of separation. You will
fortify these boundaries even at the expense of your happiness. You
will keep recreating your problems so that you remain special. You
can do that only because you don't know that you are already
special. Because you don't know this, you have to pretend you are
special through your past.
You are a unique manifestation of Life, and that is very
special. There is no comparison to your specialness. As you become
realized in The Consciousness , you become aware of it, you recognize that
you are special, and there is no attachment to it. Attachment is
holding onto something you don't really have, something that you want
to have. Resistance is pushing away something that you have, but
don't want. In order to experience attachment or resistance, you
have to be in a divided state.
It is a matter of recognizing the physicalness and the transcendence
of The Consciousness. It is all in one. You are human, plus. You have always been human, plus. You just didn't recognize the plus.
The intellect likes to make the transcendent, the vertical, into the
other, but that means that it is separate from you. The
Consciousness is not something that can ever be separate.
There is no way to prove this to you. You can only experience it,
because words create an object, which becomes the other. So, it is a
matter of having the horizontal experience of human existence
together with the vertical experience of transcendent existence,
bringing both into the heart of Life.
The "plus-ness" of Life is to recognize that things have happened to
you. These things are the past. You have acquired various
interpretations of them, you have felt the need to escape them or
attach to them. But these things happened, period. You are not
special because you have been picked on by Life. You are special
because you ARE Life, experiencing every possibility.
